Busan Jeoryeong Coastal Walk: A Healing Journey Along the Waves

When people think of Busan, they often picture crowded sandy beaches. But if you are looking for a deeper connection with the ocean—one that offers peace, rugged beauty, and a rhythm of its own—you must visit the Jeoryeong Coastal Walk.

Located at the entrance of Taejongdae in Yeongseon-dong, Yeongdo, this 3-kilometer coastal trail stretches from the management office in Namhang-dong, past Jungni Port and Gamji Beach, all the way to Taejongdae. It is not just a walk; it is a therapy session with the sea.

From Forbidden Ground to a Path of Healing

Historically, this area was known for its steep, rough terrain and served as a military protection zone, making it inaccessible to civilians. However, since opening as a promenade in 2001, it has transformed into a beloved destination.

As you walk, one side offers a gallery of tile murals and wave-patterned floors, while the other side offers the endless, open sea. The refreshing breeze and the sound of waves crashing against the wall create an immediate sense of cool relief.

A Taste of the Ocean: Meeting the Haenyeo

One of the most unique experiences on the Jeoryeong Coastal Walk is the chance to see Haenyeo (traditional female divers) at work. Belonging to the Namhang fishing village, these women dive without equipment to gather seafood.

Just past the Huinnyeoul Coastal Tunnel, you will find a humble "Haenyeo Village." Here, you can purchase the sea squirts, octopus, and turban shells they have just caught. Sitting by the rocky shore, tasting the freshest seafood while smelling the salt air, is an authentic way to experience the true flavor of Busan.

Photo Spots: Tunnels and Rainbows

Recognized as one of South Korea's "Top 5 Coastal Walks" by the government in 2014, the path is full of visual delights.

The Rainbow Piano Stairs: These colorful steps lead up to the Huinnyeoul Observatory. While the climb might take a little effort, the view from the top—overlooking the dreamlike scenery of the anchorage where ships wait—is absolutely mesmerizing.

Huinnyeoul Coastal Tunnel: If you prefer not to climb, head straight for this 70-meter tunnel. Inside, it is illuminated with colorful lights and photo zones. The silhouette shot taken from inside the tunnel looking out toward the bright blue ocean is a favorite among travelers.

Raw Nature and Thrilling Views

Once you exit the tunnel, the scenery shifts. The western coast of Yeongdo preserves its ancient, rugged natural beauty. The sight of waves smashing against the sheer cliffs provides a cathartic release for any stress you might be carrying. The Suspension Bridge connecting the rocks adds a small thrill to the walk, making the journey even more memorable.

Walking on the Sky: Jeoryeong Haerang-gil

If you head up through the forest path, you connect to the Jeoryeong Haerang-gil. This upper trail offers stunning vantage points:

Skywalk Observatory: With a transparent floor, this spot offers the dizzying and intense experience of walking right above the ocean.

75 Square: Named because it was established in 1975, this plaza is a perfect rest stop. On clear days, you can even see Tsushima Island in Japan across the horizon.

With the horizon stretching out on one side and the charming Huinnyeoul Village on the other, let the sea breeze blow away your worries.

The Jeoryeong Coastal Walk is a treasure of Yeongdo where the simple act of walking becomes a healing experience. For travelers seeking the "real" Busan beyond the city center, this path offers freedom and nature in their purest forms.
