Oryukdo Islands: The Mystery of 5 or 6 Islands in Busan
Where the East Sea Meets the South Sea
Imagine a place where the emerald waters of the East Sea and the South Sea converge. Spread across this glistening blue carpet are rock islands that appear to be five from one angle, and six from another. This is the Oryukdo Islets, a scenic masterpiece that never fails to flutter the hearts of travelers.
Among the many islands in Busan, Oryukdo is considered one of the most beautiful. Located in Yongho-dong, Nam-gu, these rock islands were formed by volcanic activity 80 million years ago. Recognizing their geological value, they have been designated as a Busan National Geopark, a Marine Protected Area, and a State-designated Cultural Heritage site.

The Mystery of the Name: 5 or 6?
The name Oryukdo literally translates to "Five-Six Islands." The islands are aligned in a row extending from the mainland:
- 1.Bangpaeseom (Shield Island).
- 2.Solseom (Pine Island)
- 3.Suriseom (Eagle Island)
- 4.Songgotseom (Awl Island)
- 5.Gulseom (Cave Island)
- 6.Deungdaeseom (Lighthouse Island)
The mystery lies in the tides. When the tide is low, the connection between Bangpaeseom and Solseom is revealed, making them look like one island (total count: 5). When the tide is high, they separate, making the count 6. Hence, the name Oryukdo.
The furthest island, Deungdaeseom, features the Oryukdo Lighthouse. It stands as a guardian of the harbor, being the first landmark ships see when entering Busan Port. It is also the only island among the group that the public can enter (via boat).

Oryukdo Sunrise Park (Haemaji Park)
To truly appreciate the panoramic view, you must head up to the Sunrise Park. After a short hike up the hill from the parking lot, you are rewarded with refreshing sea breezes and a complete view of the islets.
The park is beautifully landscaped with ecological wetlands, walking paths, pavilions, and benches, making it an ideal picnic spot.
• Travel Fact: This park is significant for hikers as it serves as the starting point of the Haeparang-gil (a 770km trail going north to the DMZ) and the Namparang-gil (a trail going west to Haenam).

The Thrill of Walking on Air: Oryukdo Skywalk
Descending from the park, you will find the Skywalk perched on a coastal cliff. This U-shaped glass bridge extends 9 meters out over the cliff edge. Walking on the transparent glass floor, with the waves crashing against the rocks 35 meters below, offers a thrilling sensation of walking on the sky. It is a place filled with the laughter (and occasional nervous gasps) of visitors enjoying the adrenaline rush.
Educational Fun: Oryukdo Promotion Hall
Located at the entrance of the Sunrise Park, the Promotion Hall (Visitor Center) is perfect for families. Here, you can learn about the marine ecosystem, the origin of the island names, and the flora and fauna of the area through audio guides. Don't miss the photo zone with the cute Oryukdo mascot - it is a mandatory stop for children!

A Taste of the Sea: Sightseeing Boats and Haenyeo
If looking from afar isn't enough, head down to the large bus parking lot to find the Sightseeing Boat Wharf. Taking a boat allows you to see the rugged cliffs and the islands up close.
Near the wharf, if you are lucky, you will find a Haenyeo (traditional female diver) market open. Sitting by the sea and tasting fresh seafood - sea squirts, octopus, and turban shells—caught directly by the divers is a raw and authentic Busan experience you cannot miss.
Standing before the vast ocean at Oryukdo, the sea seems to seep into your heart, washing away the fatigue of daily life. The waters here are always peaceful, waiting to welcome you.
